Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

If you couldn't own a CB500, which other bike would you go for?

Hi there. Just enjoying being out and about, and struck as ever by how excellent the machine is. Responsive, sparky, holds its own, comfortable... easy to maintain and repair to boot.

It got me thinking, if not a CB500, what would you own? What else is out there on the market that would be even more satisfying to ride - if money were no object.

Cheers!

If I didn't have to worry about the cost, I'd get a CBF1000, they are supposed to be really good bikes.

If I did have to worry about the cost then CB600S hornet, the one with fairing, or a CBF500

I would like to try a BMW g 650 X country. Saw one today for the first time - the seat was way lower than I expected, the bike looked  compact, it's not that heavy too - about 150kg/dry.

I've got 'Blackbird' on my bucket list.

Also a VFR800 (2000) with geardriven cams. Those should be affordable to buy and ride, compared to the Blackbird.

In actual action, the Viffer might be a more versatile choice yes, but given the chance, I've gotta try the nuclear powerplant!

cbr600 (1995-2000) for distance work and general getting about. I put 40 or 50k + on one several years ago and still regret selling it. (M86GVC if you come across it!).

CB500 is better for backroads though.

It's the FX but I think in the States that's the F4. In any case, it's the Ultima Light, and ran from '99 to 2000 and is the last of the carb'd models.

So there's one available at £1000 second hand that can do 180 miles with a pillion and camping gear between 5 minute charges  ?

There is no future for petrol and diesel engines. We have been told by every consultant and specialist on the Planet that we are terminally ill and if we don't get treatment immediately then there is no hope, but procedures are available that will secure our future. I love the cb5 I have but it will have to go whether I like it or not.

In the past there have been oil wars. In the future there will be rare earth wars. (and water wars of course)

date of article - 2005

I feel like I've been hearing this kind of thing since I first started noticing telly and radio news as a kid in the mid '70s

although it's obvious that reserves are finite, I still feel like predictions of their death are prone to exaggeration

Petrol engines could be around another 50+ years and small bikes are relatively clean... I don't know this but if I bought a new Zero I would not be surprised if the production of it contributed more greenhouse gases to the environment that it would keep my CB500 running for another 20 years given it's only done 30,000 miles over the last 20  If you couldn't own a CB500, which other bike would you go for? Electric vehicles are looking very likely in the future but there are some applications where they are not really practical yet and you never really know which direction technology will go in... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecxCL84n26g&t=593s

Also that focus is a bicycle... I already do way more miles on my push bike than my CB5 but it's no good on those occasions when you need to go a 100 miles in two hours!

I would import another 1999 cb400f nc36 50th anniversary edition, watercooled with 4 seperate exhausts. Gear driven cams and great for long rides. Wish I never sold mine.
