CB500 replacement

Post by cc1085 on Mon 03 Dec 2018, 10:44 pm

Is there any replacement for a cb5? I have owned mine a number of years now and it has more then 100k miles on the speedo. It could do with a major cosmetic overhaul but it's reliability and it's sheer fun, forgiveness and driveability is just incredible.  Started out on a BSA Bantam in 1968 and have never been away since. Had Meriden and Hickley Triumphs, Kawasakis BMW's, Yamaha and Harley, NSU, Honda Husqvarna Flyin' Bricks, Pan Euro's GTRs Tigers etc. oh and Royal Enfield. Nothing compares to you, my little cb.  Good ones are hard to find.
So what do I replace it with????
I could do a rebuild but don't really want to spend time in sheds at this time in my life, just want to ride my motorcycle.

Well.. U could get a cbf 500 which has same engine. Or newer yamaha mt07/tracer 700...or er6. Believe james hambleton has a cheap er6, for sale. I see ur in ireland theres not many clean cb 500's left in ireland... And if there in good condition snaped up quick by dealers

Almost impossible to get a good one  anywhere these days. I'll keep the one I have and nurse it on until either the bike or I retire. It's just the unique package that the cb5 is that makes it so hard to replace.

Well stick with a CB500, here's one for sale with reasonable miles, in Bangor. £750.

You can get CB500 for less than £750, however, in my experience, they will have been abused in some way - cosmetic or mechanical unless you are very lucky.

The ones that are cosmetically damaged are, in some ways, are easier to fix, especially if only viewed from a long distance Smile

To answer you question:  I don't think that there are any modern bikes that quite compare, so I wouldn't try and find one.  You'd be best to try and find a modern bike that you like and is different from the CB500, so that you can have both and, if you want, fix up the CB500 in your own time.

Hi all
Thanks for your replies. I won't sell my cb5. I will continue to use it and apply some makeup to it to keep it looking a little respectable, maybe apply some to myself as well
