Valve clearances question

Post by wust588 on Sat 28 Jul 2018, 11:03 pm

Just a question re removing cams during valve clearances check.

The bike is new to me so, is it possible to remove the cam chain tensioner without the removing the carbs or air-box?

Just thought I'd ask, though it does look a bit close in there...…

Many thanks.

John.

You might be able to if you use the key tool to back off the tensioner.

Personally I just take the lot out but also find I need to also remove the thermostat housing and hoses too or is that just me?

Thanks James for your help.

I'll remove everything, that way I can check the carb rubbers etc. I have removed all the rest of the stuff over the cams.

The cams and surrounding area look nice and clean, suggesting many oil changes over the years.

What staggers me about this particular bike, is that although there is rust on some of the bracketry (fairing support and fan), the whole frame is in lovely condition. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been repainted in its life.

A couple of years ago, I (briefly) had a CB1000F, and quite new - the MK2 I think, and that had rust developing on the swinging arm and sub-frame. In fact it looked like primer hadn't been used at all.

I can understand the following the CB500 has.

Since you've removed the cams your valves were out of spec, what sizes of shims are currently fitted?

James, I'm just about to post a new thread about the shims I have left over.
