Type of grease for steerer bearing

Post by robyn131 on Sat 14 Jul 2018, 6:30 pm

Hi, I have a replacement bearing kit to do the job but it doesn't say what grease to use. Anyone know?

Not done this job before, fairly confident in what I'm doIng, but any useful tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Almost any grease.  Maybe not pig fat or goose grease, unless you don't have anything else :)

More seriously, a multipurpose grease like the one sold by Halfords here:

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/grease/comma-multi-purpose-grease-500g

will be fine for the head bearing.  There isn't much very 'special' about, hence the 'multi purpose'.

Essentially if you go into any place that sells car parts/supplies and say 'I want your cheapest multi purpose grease' you will get something that will be fine.

Also, getting the bearing races out of the head-tube is somewhat of a battle...

Thanks for the reply. I have a tub of Lithium 2 grease so will use that.

I've found a few threads on here with helpful tips on replacing the bearings and how difficult the races can be, at least i'm going in prepared!

Yes, it is 'do-able', it's just that your first mechanism for removing the bearing races might fail and you might need to be ready with some alternatives. Probably for the best you have read the other threads Wink

Job done! Defiantly recommend watching the youtube 'how to' videos for anyone going to attempt this job. I used an 8mm blunt wood chisel to begin with, then a 20mm masonry chisel for the final stages to remove the races, took about 20 mins per race.
