Should learn how to pump start them, pretty easy once you've got the knack of it.

James, pumpstart sounds a bit odd, I always thought it was bumpstart.
Wornsprockets when you start the bike from cold do you turn the throttle at all? Engines usually start better solely on the choke, as an experiment try full choke and press the starter with your index finger and leave the throttle alone. If it won't start then something needs adjusting or something so go back to however you did it before! Good luck with it 'cos there's nothing more annoying on a nice cold miserable morning than "no go".
Dave.

Probably depends on the state of the carbs, no two will be the same.

Bought run great... but cb500s  alway took 5/6 pushes of starter button...on choke...where  cb500v nearly start on first push of button...with out...with tiny bit of throttle...  yes carbs probbably need clean ss there old bikes now...saying that cb500s gets more mpg than v

Sounds like the v is too rich. Dirty air filter? Choke stuck open, even a little? Jets in carbs too large, dropped out?

At the end of the day they are mechanisms and they should perform largely the same.

Any road up, have fun with them, when it stops raining I want to get out on mine. I know, southern froggy softie that's me   Rolling Eyes

Both cb 500's get used in a three week rotation in all weathers unless theres bad ice...i work in dublin city centre so ,i dont want to use expensive public always late transport...the road salt has give cb 500s bit of rust here and there...but up to last week both were doing great... cb500s on its original plugs so there well over due replacing after 16yrs service...and freezing cold under cover out side so that didnt help either

My, you do "put them to their proper use"! Here's a mad idea, use the best starting one for winter, mothball the other, polish and cherish it until spring and then resplendent as a butterfly it can once again grace the roads of Dublin! You can then repaint and repair the ravages of winter salt and kack on the other.

I used to enjoy driving the truck in Ireland Cork, Shannon, Dublin if I could be weekended I loved parking up at the Omniplex at Santry and do some shopping and go to the cinema, oh, and have a drink.

Try a new battery I've just thought of!

Soon be spring cheers

Well cb500s was left up for at least 7yrs and not started...hence 18/19k on it... cb500v  ive put at least 25k on it. Ive an other bike mothballed it fireblade 96 with 24k.... cb 500's need to be used... hence why one goes under cover outside for every day use as ive only a small shed.... omni shopping centre not far...from me
