I spectated between the start grid and halfway between Flowbog Crossroads and Lindsay Hairpin.. Didn't do anything else ended up in a tent helping work on a bike for a few hours, then it got rained off in the lightweight class. Gutted I only got 2 different locations for photos though I am extremely pleased with what photos I have gotten!!

So much for the Beeb weather forecasts then. "It's gonna rain. No, it's not . Yes it is. No it's not.............." and so on.

If I recognize that corner aright, James, it's where I dropped the Tiger in a fit of enthusiasm a couple of years ago. Sad

Nice shot, by the way.

May I ask what camera / lens you used?

Little Canon eos600d with a 75-300mm lens

I shoot in raw, for biking events I use about 1000/1th of a second shutter speed, iso 100, and f.4 ish

I then just mess about in photoshop for a few mins. Though a fancy camera doesn't mean you'll get good photos, it's about how you position the photo.

OK, that's great.

Do you shoot wide open (lower f number) to achieve that narrow depth of field and nice blurred background, or do you do that in postprocessing?

Edit, just reread your post, it is indeed quite open Smile

The narrow depth of field is also to do with the focal length as well, as I recall. If you try and do that kind of thing in photoshop or gimp or whatever it usually looks pants. You can sometimes get away with it if there isn't too much background in the shot, but it can take ages to get right/less bad. Almost easier to get the right shot in the first place :)

Or edit the raw file and save it as two seperate images, then blur and overlap the two images like a mask

Yup, my thoughts exactly Wink
And yes, narrowest depth of field = longest focal length + widest aperture + closest to the subject as possible.
