Solved selling one of my CB500s - want £500 **sold**

Post by trevor machine on Sun 01 Oct 2017, 11:16 am

This bike has got 60k on the clocks, but there is some MOT discrepancy. I'm the twelfth (!) owner. There is no corrosion anywhere on the bike apart from some slight signs of oxidation on the down-pipes. It had new fork seals three years ago. There are some receipts that I've personally collected, but when I purchased the bike (2014) it came with no paperwork, except for its then current MOT. Present MOT is up next August i.e. 2018. No advisories.

The engine number doesn't match the log book, strongly suggesting it's had a lump swap at some point.

I recently replaced its Showa rear shocks with some YSS ones.

It has Michelin Pilot Activs tyres on it, probably half worn or better. Fwiw I like these tyres very much and while they obviously don't last as long as e.g. Avon Road Riders, they offer far more feel, warm up much quicker, and thus better in the wet and the dry. It's had a new front sprocket this year, and I'd guess that the chain and rear sprocket have ten thousand miles left on them if maintained to the current owner's standard. Seriously - I make a fair bit of effort in caring for my sprox and chains, cleaned with paraffin after each ride, and then lubricated with gear oil (done this way, you will rarely spend on new chain and sprockets).

I've ridden the bike most days since purchasing it, but very rarely in the wet.

I've owned CB500s for five years and put in the region of 100k on these bikes. This one rides as it should, and stops properly. It has a rear drum brake - which imo is considerably stronger than the later disc version, and offers more 'feel' too.

I have fitted a Fuel end can and link pipe - at present the baffle is out, but I do have it so it can easily be refitted. I also have the original Honda exhaust, which is in very good condition.

At present the speedo and tacho lights are not working, and the side-stand is very slightly saggy. Also, because the bike has had replacement YSS shocks fitted, it's necessary to turn the bars full lock left or right in order to rotate the rear wheel (this is because the shock absorbers are slightly longer than the OEM ones).

Little jobs I've done recently - removed the front mudguard brace (an item that is very easily corroded by rain and debris thrown up by the front wheel), painted it and then greased it prior to refitting. I've also fitted a "Fenda Extenda" to the front mudguard, and a further extension to that - in order to provide added protection to headers and downpipes. I've fitted some fork leg protectors too, and a brand-new OEM chain slider. One other little task - main and side stands have been painted with Hammerite (both were very solid but original paint was getting a bit thin in places).

The gearbox on this bike is particularly good, in my view. I've never had a single false neutral, and selecting true neutral is always simple. Gear selection is slick, positive and uncharacteristically excellent for these bikes.

Since owning the bike I've changed the oil every two thousand miles, and filter every four. The motor shows no signs of fatigue. It's happy in heavy traffic and grid lock, and is only too glad to hare off into open roads. It pulls properly in all gears, starts well and warms up quickly. I very rarely need to use choke - just a bit of throttle nursing before setting off. I was hoping to put a 100k on this bike over the next few years, and can't see any reason why this wouldn't be possible. However, I'm not the rider for the job as I've just bought an old zx9r which is now my main bike. Four in a cramped garage means at least one has got to go - some thinning of the herd has been deemed necessary.

I'm half way between York and Hull - not *that* far from Leeds. At present the bike isn't getting used. It likes daily running to be at its best.

Okay - looks like photobucket's being a complete tosser. Can't seem to actually post images. They show up in preview but then won't post to the thread proper.

Try servimg.com. Stormbringer uses it and it seems to work for me.

That's a bargain for someone, almost tempted just in case I fancy my bike being green for a while!

I'm also thinking if this is your 'scruffy' one what does your 'clean' one look like?!

This bike's too soft and comfy for you James. Wink

It's an old man's slogger not a young lad's ragger.

Only joking - I think you'd like it, and would get lots of miles out of it if you ran it as is.

The clean one really is extremely tidy.

Tbh the above pictures are a bit flattering, if only because they're soft focus. That said, I think a decent close inspection wouldn't disappoint most people, especially when they factor in the price. Also, whatever misgivings they might have would be lessened once they rode it I reckon.

Soz guys forgot to mention - I fitted a brand new OEM Honda radiator to the bike about two years ago. I still have the one that was on it when I bought it - it was water-tight and functioned properly but was warped and had obviously taken a fair bit of a knock. Can't remember how much I paid for the replacement but am thinking ton fifty-ish. I got it from a supplier in Germany and questioned him about the supposed "OEM" nature of the radiator, saying it seemed suspiciously cheap. He assured me it was the real deal so I pulled the trigger and got it fitted, w/ new neat green coolant. Suffice to say it's worked perfectly from that date on.

Someone will be happy with that bike for £500!

I paid a little more than that for my bike over 8 years ago and it wasn't it *that* good condition...
