Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

300,000 km in Honda CB 500

Post by hh_12345 on Sat 03 Jun 2017, 9:02 pm

An article for a long term test of cb 500 in French.

Not a news at at all I guess, posting this to only share links to the images of the disassembled bike that I enjoyed.

This bike is a legend, I think it's still being driven today, being closer to 400,000km :p

It was bought by "Moto Revue" crew in 1993 when it was released, and was brought  everywhere, on all the test ride they did, as far as Dakar in Senegal. They wanted to make sure that Honda's claim that the engine had been tested to 300,000km with no issue wasn't just a marketing stunt, they were quite dumbfounded when they opened the engine and found that it was in such a good state with very little wear. It was ridden by everyone, being treated like the underdog it was, pushed to the limit on a regular basis.

They still changed the pistons and cam chain as a precautious measure at 100,000km.

Then the crankshaft bearings at 150,000. Winter salt and grime was hard on the bike and what suffered the most was the frame which they had to weld back, as well as change the swingarm, the front brake-calliper, the exhaust, the seat and tank cap.

They changed the pistons again at 300,000km, front brake disc, clutch cable and lever, speedo cable. At this stage the frame was getting quite rotten around the centre stand apparently, but when you see what it's been through...

That is awesome! My bike has 120,000 km on the clock. It has a lot of life in it yet!

I found the original article on the web a few days ago and was going to create a new thread with a full translation.  While patiently waiting for the 7 day noobie limit on posting I came across this thread.

I let Google translate do most of the hard work and then edited it to hopefully make sense of some wording.  The words in () and italics are mine.

A bit 'poetic' at times but worth a read...

English translation

Vive le CB500 cheers

I've been crawling through their website trying to find an email or contact form... no luck just yet but I will persist Smile

My son is living in France so I might try that route...

I think we should be very grateful to Mr. Imai for making this legend machine.

Found another Moto Revue article on an unofficial 24 hour endurance in 2009 with 350,000km on Miss CB's clock, well 50,000 and third time round.

There is other stuff as well all in French

I'll post a translation soon.  if you can't wait copy and paste the address in to Google Search or Chrome web browser and use the translate option.
