Throttle cable awareness week

Post by Jameshambleton on Sun 30 Apr 2017, 7:19 pm

Since we have a clutch cable awareness week I thought it would be rather fitting to have a throttle cable awareness week too.

For uhh reasons.

The push cable can be used as a pull cable but you CAN NOT ride with just a push cable and no pull as previously thought.

I completely forgot to add that the cable snapped part way along the length and not at either end.

Say what?!?!?

Which brings me to ask this question:

Any up-front signs this was going to happen? Stiff operation, a sense of something catching, anything?

And: With a Throttle Cable Awareness Week, we should have a name to go with it, shouldn't we?

  • National Clutch cable awareness week - Nuckuckaw - primo August
  • (Global?) Throttle cable awareness week - NoNameSoFar - primo May
  • International Headlight awareness week - Intheaw? - primo April

No sign of anything out of the norm to suspect anything.

Cable was lubricated all the way from the switch gear down to the carbs.

I've been rather aggressive with the throttle the last two days so that won't have helped, had it on the back wheel more times than I care to remember. funny enough, I was actually taking it steady as I was on my way home going in the opposite direction to what I'm use to, slight incline and then put the power on to maintain my speed and it just went there and then.

Haha. But with chain sliders lasting so much longer than cables, wouldn't that be a decade-thing.

1998-2008-2018-2028?

2018: The Year Of the Chain Slider? The chinese can keep their snakes, dragons etc...

Mine snapped in just this way too - sadly I didn't have any tools on my bike (at the time) and had to blag a lift!

I'd certainly suggest that we had a throttle cable awareness week (T-CAW?) - mine seemed to have failed due to age (the outside had failed and let water in which corroded the inside cable) rather than wear.

I had my bike sat up for over a year and when getting it sorted for the MOT the throttle wouldn't snap back to rest position when released. Took cables off (and carburettors) and lubed them with oil (using a pressurised cable oiler) and checked the spring on the carbs which was fine. Replaced all and same issue. Came to the conclusion that the inner cable was frayed. Ordered new Honda cables and fitted using original route for cables and still sticking. Took off and routed cables as straight as possible and problem solved. Fitted everything and passed MOT a few days later. For the price of new Honda cables I felt it was worth the investment - the bike is 23 years old after all  Shocked
