DIY penetrating oil - anyone know if this is true?

Post by stormbringer on Wed 22 Mar 2017, 2:31 pm

I've stumbled on this article-reference-thingy describing the 'potency' of different makes of penetrating oil - and a single DIY mix.

Very interesting. It turns out the DIY mix runs circles round the commercial stuff.
But when something sounds almost too good to be true - it usually is.

Peer review. Anyone heard about this DIY stuff?

50% Acetone + 50% ATF oil = 100% efficiency.

Sounds like it'll work. I'll have to have a read up about it when I get home

That does look interesting.
Any ideas where plusgas sits on that list?

Don't think so. ATF is not suitable as an engine lubricant, or vice versa.

An engine wouldn't last long on ATF. It's got completely different properties to engine oil.

Hi

ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid and it is very different from engine oil.

I have heard the ATF + Acetone rumour but have never tried it. My plusgas is running out, so maybe I will...

Automatic Transmission Fluid. It's a thin oil which is resistant to foaming.

Back in the days of CX500s and Super Dreams (clever name), ISTR we used either fork oil or ATF in the front forks.
