Chirping highish pitch sound top end

Post by stevodemo on Sun 18 Dec 2016, 9:37 pm

my old CB with nearly 100 k in the last week has started to give out a chirping sound ( like parts rubbing). It started after a 30 mile m way run ( hot engine ) . The sounds is when stationary and increases with rpm.
It is becoming more regular including when cold but is not always there .
Any ideas? No rattling( which would tell e its cam chain or tensioning )!
Could it be cam bearing surfaces .. Or tensioner issues (I have heard of some bikes screeching with faulty tensioner a ) ...or guide or tension blades for cam chain ...??
I'm hoping someone may have come across this . Thanks all

It's going to be very hard to say without hearing it. When the cam-chain tension is 'on-the-way' it is much more like a 'ticking' type noise. It *could* be the tensioner blades, but only way to tell would be to take the valve cover off and have a look - if you get that far you might as well check the valve clearances while you are there!

The other snag is that, I think (do correctly be if I'm wrong), you have to take an awful lot of engine apart to change the tensioner blade... so I hope it's not that!

IT does sound like the non rattley sound on that !
I will post a sound soon .Although I am starting to think it's cam chain related . No ticking but the sound today on warm up was more noticeable when reducing throttle After a rev of the engine ...
I would rather or was just the tensioner to avoid pull apart ! We'll see

Yes, the tensioner is an easy fix... let's hope it is that!

If you buy one and it *doesn't* fix it you can probably sell for mostly full price on here, or if you are planning on keeping the CB you *will* need a tensioner at some point and it doesn't go off...
