The Shim Exchange

Post by sullivj on Sun 21 Aug 2016, 9:38 pm

For those who don't know, the idea is simple....:

Let me know what shims you need when doing your valve clearance adjustment. If I have them in The Shim Exchange, I'll post them out to you by 1st class post.

When you've finished the job, all I ask is that you post your spares back to me, so they can benefit someone else.

Already, many have benefited from, and contributed to The Shim Exchange.

If you have any spare shims, please PM me for the address to send them to. It saddens me when people 'forget' to donate their spare shims...

Currently, we have:

  • 192
  • 198 x 3
  • 200 x 9
  • 202
  • 205
  • 208 x 2
  • 210

I probably will really appreciate this when I know what it is all about.
Good job, thanks.

My pleasure chaps.  I sent some more off this morning in fact.

I've asked Admin to try and attach a spreadsheet that helps to calculate what shims you need, once you've measured your gap, and know what shims are already in place.

If anyone needs the spreadsheet in the meanwhile, just drop me a PM with your email address.

Sully, maybe in the mists of time I've asked this before, but what is the diameter of these shims, as I have a box full of shims inherited from somewhere. They are the right thickness range but are probably too big in diameter as they were probably from Imp engines.

May I trade 2 shims:
202
200

For that single 192?

(Also need another 192 or a 188 if you happen to have any in the collection?!)

I think I still have your address from when I sent them last time assuming you haven't moved since then!

Of course Ceejay.

Please PM your address, and I'll send the 192. I don't have the others you need unfortunately.

If anyone has any shims they would like to add to the exchange, please let me know.

Thanks,
John

+1 from me as well.

@sullivj: Would you mind if I try moving this thread to Workshop - and eventually make it sticky if I can figure out how?

Moved. However, Forumotion doesn't stock stickies for me to upgrade this most relevant thread with. That should hopefully change soon.

All too big for my bike now, 74,000 miles and the gaps are closing up... PM me and I'll post you my leftovers when I'm done.

B

Any updates on sizes... mines strangeling my engine they're so tight.

All 32 of my spare shims are too large

I think the list above is still correct.

If you've got 32 spares, perhaps you'd like to add them to the exchange?

Seasons greetings ladies and gents, that was a cold day spent in the shed but the shims are measured at last,

Is the shim exchange still active? I’m looking for 3 x2.00, 1 x1.9 and 1 x1.925

Was going by 0.025 increments suggested by Haynes - appologies if they dont exist...

Im more than happy to donate my left over shims when I’m done

Cheers Geewhizz
