I am not a mechanic by trade  but i worked in quite a few of the above name garages and i saw what so called technicians got up too, try a car with new suspension fitted and it collapsed out on the road...(i joke u not) and i saw one customers red in face with anger and make a receptionist cry...after getting a bill and top brand  car at least 100k (euro) come off a transporter and 5mins later burst into flames and it was hid for over a year as they didnt know what caused it( this car was zero miles straight from factory)  its only tip of the iceberg

Just to wrap this one up...

After many phonecalls between vw customer care/complaints team and myself, the dealer offered to pay half the total sum of a new air con unit. Thus leaving me with around £400 to pay not long after many other hefty bills. I informed vw that I would only pay the labour and this was rejected so they have now lost my business and a local vw specialist indy garage will now have my custom. All their 'technicians ' defected from the dealers to work there, which speaks volumes. Although I'm sure they will survive quite happily without my bank card continually in their machines and they don't even know I will no longer go there,  I have a feeling they will try to contact me in the future.

F*ck 'em.

I think a lot of people have come this conclusion with main/big dealers when it comes to servicing and repairs - both with bikes and cars - they don't seem to have any customer service skills and charge top dollar for substandard work!

Absolutely. There is a chap over here who used to be with the Ford dealership and has set up by himself as a mechanic specialising in Fords. I have taken my car to him previously with a laundry list of issues and he has done a great job. I much prefer supporting the independents, particularly where the service will be comparable but for a good amount less £££ (the list of things he did on the car was huge for the money he charged). They actually want the business because the food on their table depends on you being satisfied.

I agree with the above replies.

My year of taking the car to a dealer was a trial as I've used independent all my days. I was a bit peeved with crappy pattern parts failing all the time so thought I'd try dealers.

That's done. Well, at vw anyway.  By and large Subaru have been great but I only need to go once a year really.
