battery / charging issue

Post by gazza23 on Sat 16 Jul 2016, 11:50 am

Hi,

the other day I was slowing down to a T junction and my bike cut out, flat dead. I turned the ignition off then on again, dash lights lit up, and headlamp, starter only tick, tick, ticked. Got recovered home, charged the battery overnight, put it back in and vroom, starts like normal. Took the battery to a battery shop and it tested OK.

So, I put the battery back in the bike, with a meter across the battery terminals I get 14v (Think my meter is off a bit), with ignition on, same reading, engine idling - same reading, engine revving to 5krpm - same reading, headlights on or off - same reading. As a test, I put the meter on my van battery and got 13v increasing as the engine revved, as expected.

I'm hoping that someone can advise as to where to go next with chasing this problem down.

Thanks
Gazza

Could just be a bad earth to the engine. Or a sticking starter motor/ worn brushes.

Test the stator connections.
You'll find them under the side stand side, side panel. It'll be mounted on a little sort of bracket next to a green connection.
You can see the green connection on the left of this image.

Unclip it and then check the yellow wires for resistance. do 1-2, 1-3, 2-3. If there is any high resistance your stator is on the way out. If they all come back with similar readings then it should be fine.

The reg/rec is tested in the same way. Unbolt it from the bracked mentioned earlier.

Try this simple test to start with :

In the dark, point the bike at a light coloured wall. Start it, put the headlight on and apply brake so the brake light stays on. Rev the engine up to about 3k revs. The headlight should brighten noticeably as you rev, then dim again as the bike settles to tick over.

If it doesn't then you've got a rectifier / stator problem. My money would be the rectifier as they are a known issue on these bikes.

Hi all thanks for the replies.

@jameshambleton I checked on either side of the stator
the side with 3 x yellow & red /white & green got 9, 44 & 55 across the yellow terminals..
on the side with just yellow I couldn't get anything

on the reg/rect I got -1 across each  each of the yellow connections.

Still stumped...

I'm still stumped.

Simple battery / charging tests  works almost all bikes over 250cc

Charge battery !
1 a charged battery should have 12.5 volt or more across it
2 start engine
idling  12.8v or more
revving to 1/2 revs 13.8v / 15v
more than 15 volts regulator part rec/reg is dead
less the 13.8 no or poor charge

Stator test
three wires out usually yellow or white

any one to -ve  (earth)  grater than 30M ohms
between any pair (three tests between 0.3 and 2 ohms

REG reg  if stator test good and charge poor or over volts (with good charged battery ) rec/reg is duff

You need a mulit meter a cheap one will do but it is well worth having a half decent one

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I couldn't figure it out, took it into a shop, They investigated, then replaced the reg/rec. Bike is now running sweet again.

cheers
