Fastest car you've driven?

Post by sullivj on Mon 29 Feb 2016, 6:10 pm

Today, my friend let me have a drive of his Mercedes C63 AMG estate.

What an amazing vehicle. Almost too much power (450ish BHP!) from the 6.3 litre engine that has been shoehorned into the engine bay. You can feel the rear end squirm, as it tries to put all that power down onto the road. 0-62MPH arrives in just over 4 seconds!

Apparently on the newer 4 litre model, they replicate the engine noise of the 6.3, and play it through the stereo! That's just cheating!

Prior to that, the fastest car I've driven was the Porsche Cayman which had unbelievable road handling ability.

My daily driver is a BMW 330 - 3 litre, 250 BHP. It feels sluggish compared to the Merc!

What's the fastest car you've driven, and what was good about it?

Ferrari 355 challenge and a porche GT3. Both were on a driving day at elvington.
my daily is a Mitsubishi colt CZT with at the moment 150BHP which is nippy. Hoping to get it remapped to around 200 in the coming months.

This

But does it matter. Fast cars are useless these days. Interestingly I came up behind a Ferrari 458 Spider at a traffic lights in Holywood yesterday and though I had to rev a bit to stay with him at first, he's still there stuck in the traffic somewhere I dare say. The CB proceeded on its' way, rider whistling a merry tune.

My mums 1.4 astra, straight into a 4ft wide hawthorn hedge at a mind boggling speed of less than 3mph. First time behind the wheel but it was in the driveway and my mum expected me to be able to turn it at full wheel lock. I didn't manage to stall it though so I'm still pretty happy with my experience although my mother not so much.

- which is slightly faster than your CB500. Any old - I'll just grab a name out of thin air here - FJ1200 will teach the C63 a lesson in that discipline.

What IS impressive though is the fact that the merc will soldier on up through the register and allow you to cruise at mind-boggling speeds. All while sipping a cup of petrol-station-coffee, listening to the stereo. In the rain!

I never have gotten past a MB 300D series 124 - a nice and cosy 3-litre diesel delivering a comforting soundscape and a trust-inspiring push in the back - for quite a while until it runs out of speedometer. Not half the fun of the inline-5 2.5 litre diesel in a MB190 (the 201 series). With that one I've done four-wheel-drifting in the wet (without customers!). Even better soundscape - there's a bar-brawler-accent to the inline-5 that is irresistible to the hooligan in me.

But when it comes to in-yer-face-brutal-acceleration and - well, directness, no ordinary car can match a bike.

I mean - our CB's (all bikes, in fact) are equipped with a six-speed-dogbox. Something you only see in rally-cars... Use it!

If you haven't tried it yet, experiment with clutchless shifting and the 7-10k rev-register. The dogbox will only get better as you go higher. You'll end up riding home with a big fat grin on your face - at a fraction of the cost of a C63.

The fact that sound is important to your perception - well, your story on the 4-litre says it all. But why settle for less? If it's fun you're after, figure out how to wear down your hero-knobs.

Mitsubishi evo 9 gt with an engine stroker kit prouducing 600hp(less on irish poor petrol grade) this car had serious money spent on it . ( i was a passenger wasnt allowed to drive it) engine went bang later in mondello. Amazing car, simular  type to car jeremy clarkson blew up with a army tank on top gear few years ago( saying it was owned by a drugdealer) my friend knew the car he was driving as it was bought by bbc from  a member of mitsubishi owners club in uk,

Long time ago was handbuilt Mark one Ford escort with a 4.2 rover engine . Mates dad built it for fun. First gear was for getting it off th e drive and parking cos was never used on road. I got it up to 140 and cuddent fell the road at all. Rear wheel drive on fat tyres. Start in second, move to third in about 2 seconds 4th was like blinking. And course it had the gear box to suit 5th would take it to arround 150 he was into dragging.

Scary shit lol Shocked

Huh - good question. Not sure. Think it might have been a Renault 5 turbo back in the late '80s. It was at that time when turbos were fashionable - one mate had an RS turbo, another had a Metro turbo (!), and this other friend the Renault 5. The lad with the RS previously drove a bog standard 1.6 mkIII escort - carb'd. But it had had a whole shitload of work done on it - soft road cam, k&n air filter, Jan Speed gear box, twin choke weber carbs, etc. etc. And, believe it or not, it was imo twice the car the RS was - I think he realised this because not long after he paid someone to steal the RS and torch it so he could get cash. Or at least that was what he told me. Not sure why he didn't just sell it, but meh. Anyway, the point is that the mod'd mkIII was much more exciting because of how the power came in, the noise it made, the way it handled, etc. Whereas the RS was all so quiet, smooth and effortless - very bland. The story was similar with the other turbos mentioned, including the Renault 5 - which incidentally seemed to be suffering some sort of braking issue because when I had a go it pulled heavily to one side. Hence I nearly pranged the bastard.

Hehe. Well, time is a funny thing. As it passes, only the good memories remain - most other things fade away and are forgotten.

The 300D inline-6 was a good car. It had an air of 'done right' to it. But looking back, I'd take the inline-5 in a 190 chassis any day of the week.

Bar-brawler-sound and the sweet memory of going sideways Wink

But in the real world I'm actually a Citroën-kinda-guy. I grew up with the DS my dad drove all his life, I've had a couple of CX'es (last one hibernates in long-time storage) and I've just gotten hold of a Xantia winter hack.

You should never touch a Citroen. It's a well known fact in the UK that french cars and Citroens in particular are unreliable rubbish. I mean to say my Xsara has actually needed to have an exhaust hanger replaced in the last 4 years. Shocking record that.

Unfortunately, neither the Xantia nor the Xara are proper Citroëns. Neither have the mad-scientist-meets-designer-on-LSD-vibe. And they are both PSA-products, made not because the creators wanted to make their mark in history but made to make a profit.
The only thing that helps making the Xantia remotely interesting is the hydraulics and the passive steering-assisting rear-axle arrangement. Makes for a surprisingly agile driving style when used properly. I have no comment on the Xara.

The upside to Citroëns bad reputation is that they are cheap as chips when bought second-hand.

Considering I live in a country where a BMW 535 estate sells for 100.000 pounds new (actually, that was last year's price...), the 700£ i paid for my Xantia estate is a bargain. And it was freshly MOT'd and came with a set of winter tires too.
Not complaining. Great winter hack Smile

Well, my brother colllects exotic cars, so (luckily) i have tried a lot actually. But to this date the fastes was his Ferrari 599 GTO (670hp). Besides that, i have driven his Ferrari 355, Ferrari F430, Ferrari F430 Spider, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Ferrari 16M Scuderia, Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo, BMW M5 and his Fiat 500 Abarth Scuderia (Ferrari Edition). At this moment, his 2016 Porsche GT3RS is ready for delivery, and within the next 2-3 months, his Ferrari 488 Spider and Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster is also being delivered. So its going to be an exiting spring.

I have an old video from his first F430 Spider at Ferrari owners day en Sweden. Recorded with my old Sony mobile phone Razz

Sadly the fastest car I've ever driven is probably a 1.8L Ford Focus Zetec Embarassed

I'd be interested to know how something like a Mercedes C63 AMG that has roughly equivalent 0-60 performance to the CB500 (but obviously is a lot quicker after that) compares for fun/thrills/overall-quickness-on-the-road in the real world. I imagine you *feel* the acceleration more because you have a seat behind you and because you're in nearly two tonnes of metal, and I imagine on motorways and fast dual-carriageways you'd feel like you had way more power at your command, but on a winding B-road or small A-road I'd be interested to know how the experiences and abilities compare.

Not wanting to start a bike vs car debate but hopefully this being a bike forum that won't happen ; )

Yeah, I'm more at this end of the scale - the 'fastest' car I've ever driven is probably a 2.3 litre Peugeot 406 estate we used to have at work... mind you, it went faster because it wasn't my car :)

You should bear in mind that my current car is a 1988 Saab 900 - it's not even the turbo version! (I have nothing against the turbo, it just wasn't cheap and available when I needed a car)..... so the CB500 seems quite fast to me!
