Fork seals

Post by si.p on Sat 26 Jul 2014, 1:06 pm

I know this topic has been done to death but I cant seem to get anything to work. I have stripped the forks down but cant get the seals out. I have tried pulling them apart, filling them with water and even using boiling water but nothing works.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm replacing the stanchions at the same time so any ideas that will damage them is fine.

I have managed to prise the seal out as I'm not worried about damaging the stanchions but I still cant separate them. Is it just a case of keep pulling them until they go?

I'd imagine the top bush is stuck.
Pop the spindle through the bottom leg, straddle it with your feet to stabilise the fork leg and work the stanchion up and down in a slide hammer action until it comes free. Watch you don't whack yourself when it comes free!

Silly question but I've embarrassingly done it myself before and it an easy thing to overlook.
Have you undone the allen key bolt at the bottom of the fork?

Second that above ^

Top bush should pop out with 3 or 4 good whacks of the stachion (said the actress).

Invert the fork and apply some load to the spring when trying to undo the damper rod bolt, worked for me.

Failing that, slather the top bush with WD40 and warm the fork leg around the bush recess.

Hope that helps.

Broom stick down the stanchion also works.

You can make a puller to ease it out gently if you have some time.
