Hi all,

Just picked up a 2003 CB500S on eBay. It's a good runner but needs a bit of TLC, so it's now slightly dismantled on the workbench awaiting some parts. When I found the air filter was marked "fitted at 26, 500 july 07" I realised the PO was not quite as honest as he made out with the "well maintained" bit.

Still, it was cheap enough and will be fine after a few evening's work. I've only bought it for the commute into London everyday, which I'm sure it's ideal for.

Hi there, and welcome.

Commuting is the kind of thing a CB500 excels at. I'm sure you'll not regret your purchase.

If you knock the spiders out of it and give it a vacuum then that air filter will be fine :)

Welcome mate! The CB5 is a great little commuter, perfect for town work.
Do check the rad fan earth wire is in tact; fixes behind the top bolt on the rad fan and like to rust off.

Post up a picture of your bike if you can.

Welcome.

On a more serious note, it is probably more important how many miles it has done - I don't really think they 'go off' too quickly but they can clog up with dust and dirt, so it might be more sensible to write the mileage on it, rather than the date.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So far I've flushed out the cooling system and fitted a new  radiator (pattern) as the old one was shot. Checked the fan and that all works, had to redo the earth connection though.

Drained the oil out and refilled with some cheapo stuff then ran it during the coolant flushing,  then drained the cheap stuff out. New filter and decent oil are now in. And a new air filter has been fitted.  Very Happy

Stripped and rebuilt the front calliper as that was pretty stiff, pretty gunked up behind the seals, but all good now.

One of the fork seals is weeping so that will be done shortly and then head races need some adjusting while I'm there.

Then it needs a damn good run to the coast to blow the crud out of the carbs and engine.

Looks pretty good.

You shouldn't have a problem doing fork seals - there isn't anything particularly special about the forks on the CB500!

Where's 'the coast' near to you?

Brighton is the closest part of the coast for me. Fork seal took about 20 minutes to do - I've done enough of them over the years and the CB500 is certainly one of the simpler ones.

Took it out for about 25 miles around the country roads, giving it a good rev through the range and it's now sounding a whole lot better, much smoother tickover. Runs pretty well, I just need to balance the carbs now and it'll do.

You are miles from me: my nearest coast is probably Hunstanton!

Glad to hear it is sounding better after a good thrashing.

Hmm...just found out it's got a charging fault as well. Good job it's a light bike that's easy to bump start.

That's tomorrow sorted then.

Not far at all, we'll have to sort a "Southern CB500 ride-out" one of these days

I'd be up for this. I live on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, but I'm a south Essex lad. And I love riding my bike!
