Honda CB500S to CB500 Conversion and other mods

Post by Szabi on Tue 26 Nov 2013, 8:33 pm

Hi All,

I have a 1998 Honda CB500S which I am very satisfied with, but thinking about converting into a Honda CB500 with the following mods:

-Remove front fairing
-Remove speedo
-Install Dominator Twin headlights

-Install universal speedo

-Install Honda CB500 side covers

-Install smaller indicators
-Install Handguards
-New mirrors
-Respray all body parts to matte black

I am trying to make the front of the bike look like the Buell XB12X Ulysses Adventure:

I might also make the front fender look similar to the Buell and maybe a home made belly pan.

Has anyone tried anything like this before or has anyone ever converted a CB500S into a naked CB500?
Will the Honda CB500 side panels fit straight on to my bike?

Any info is welcome Wink

Many thanks

I have found this awesome looking bike on the net:

My plan is similar with a little bit less black and the Buell's headlight, handguards, etc

The side panels screw onto the radiator and tank.

Make sure your tank and rad have the right holes.

LOt of effort then, if you are changing the front perhaps go for a Powerbronze Venom : http://www.powerbronze.co.uk/822852/818248/---VENOM.model

Well, that's a shame. I will probably consider different headlights then.

The bike is being used every day for the next few weeks, so I won't start this project. After that I will be starting at my new work and will cycle most times sot the Honda can be off road if needed.

Are the front forks and the handlebar the same on the CB500 as it is on the CB500S?

Thanks for all the info Wink

Yes, as far as I know, the forks are certainly the same diameter.

What you are planning is do-able; it just might take a little time and fiddling to get it spot on!

It is *possible* to make headlights in that shape that do work; you just need to find out which brand is best!

You could always get some twin headlights off another bike. Perhaps VFR400Z, if there's one being broken on ebay. Would be cheaper, too.

The top yoke and method of bar mounting are different. The 'S' bar has resilient mountings and the naked bars are rigidly mounted. Have a look at the parts diagrams in the 'Stickies' section

Does this go the same for other twin street fighter lights then?

The lower yoke is also different, they have a different offset and holes to mount the headlamp bracket frame.

I've always fancied a twin headlight set up, but not at the expense of seeing at night.

A lot of the cheaper twin headlights are complete rubbish. And if they are not and both lights are on at the same time you will need to fit a relay, because two 60w bulbs are likely to melt the wiring.

The stock CB light is one of the better lights out there, I'm still looking for a clear glass unit from a later Honda, but until then I'll stick to the standard light and an Osram bulb.

Why not fit a number board and fit a projector in the centre, its what I plan on doing to my nekkit cb5.

Sorry if being dumb, but what is a 'number board'?

I was considering also projectors instead of Twin headlights, or as badseeds suggested- get a decent twin headlight from a different bike.

The only issue is how to fix the light to my forks/yoke and how to hide all the wires.

Yeah you would have to make a mount for the light, pretty easy really. The wires would probably be the main issue!

One number board ^^

After reading lots of reviews of aftermarket headlights on the net I think I can say that they are complete rubbish and I will be using a standard 7" round headlight.

Any of you guys have an unwanted standard round headlight unit for sale?

I've got a spare that came as a job lot with some other parts I bought. It's not 100%, but it works.

Make me an offer if you're interested.

Cheers.
