CB500 maximum load?

Post by bud_44 on Fri 13 Apr 2012, 2:15 pm

Hi everyone. Newbie here. Can someone please tell me what the maximum load in terms of weight a CB500 can carry? Thanks for your help. Ride safe my friends. Bud

Hello Bud, according to my owner's manual, it's 184kg (which is about 29stone, or 406lbs..)

Sorry Bud, I was a bit quick off the mark, I gave you the figure for my bike, a CB500S (with a fairing.) The CB500 is slightly less. I'll quote what my owner's manual says exactly:
"The combined weight of the rider, passenger, cargo and additional accessories must not exceed the max weight capacity:
CB500: 180kg
181kg...SW
CB500S: 184kg
185kg...SW
Cargo weight alone should not exceed:
19kg (42lbs..)"

Thanks so much for your help BC3841. My first choice if I could get one would be the CB500S. It is such a shame they are not sold in America. It looks like I'll be buying a used Ninja 250, 2007 or older. I read the story about the guy that went from Austin, TX to south America with his wife and lots of gear, 400 pounds total, on a 2003 Ninja 250. He went 15,000 miles and had no problems with the bike. He was gone 6 or 7 months. Thanks again. Ride safe my friend. Bud

To give you some sort of idea; I weigh 14 1/2 st and I've had my brother who weighs about the same as pillion and the bike fully loaded with camping gear and it handled it no problems. The photo below was before we set off!

Just make sure you adjust the tyre pressures & preload on the rear suspension accordingly.

Hello Bud,

My CB500S is identical to the CB500 except for the
additional half-fairing. I would think a fly screen that fits on to the
headlight would be available in the States - if not specifically for the CB500
then a universal one - that would fit your headlight.

I would definitely hang on to the CB500 rather than change
it for a 250. CB500s are known for their reliability and are obviously more
powerful than 250s. Besides, the max weight permissible according to Mr. Honda
is 180 kg, which is 396 lbs., only 4 lbs. short of 400, unless you meant the
weight of the cargo alone.

‘Teamster1975’ took the words out of my mouth when he says
his bike carries 29 stone plus cargo (though I wonder how he sees over the
treasure chest balancing on his tank bag!) Those figures I sent were Honda’s,
which obviously err on the safe side, otherwise leaving themselves open to
claims.

As ‘teamster1975’ says, just adjust the tyre pressures
(solo: front: 29psi, rear: 33; with pillion: front: 29, rear: 36) and preload
on the rear suspension (you’ve got 5 positions on the rear shocks, position 2
being the standard position and as you go up to position 5, the suspension gets
stiffer) to suit the load weight and riding conditions.

More words of wisdom from Mr. Honda: “Keep cargo weight low
and close to the centre of the bike. Load weight equally on both sides to
minimise imbalance. As weight is located further from the bike’s centre of
gravity, handling is proportionately affected.

One last thing: I remember reading in one of my previous manuals
that you should readjust your foot brake play to slightly less than normal when
carrying a passenger.
That’s it. I hope this epistle hasn’t bored you to tears
and you find it useful.
